Hp for the new RAV4, in case anyone was wondering like I was.
203 hp and 184 lbs-ft for the base 2.5. Not bad. I also hear the weight distribution is close to 50:50 and the rear suspension is double wishbone plus the AWD gets torque vectoring.
Im not saying its going to be fast, but I bet it will actually be pretty fun to drive. I am really excited for the reviews.
The hybrid is supposed to be the “fun” one though, with somewhere between 219 and 222 hp and ¯\_()_/¯ torque. though because its a hybrid from Toyota it will be programed for exactly zero fun. Though they are saying it could net as much as 50 mpg. which...dayum.

That...doesn’t look awful. I wonder how it’ll look compared to the next Gen CR-V

sore the Rav4 gets 200hp but the Corolla doesn’t
![]() 11/15/2018 at 11:20 |

Its going to be interesting, with the Honda going turbo and the Toyota sticking to their guns with NA. I’m hearing it wont be fast, even with 200+ hp (0-60 in the 8 range) on account of all the hp being at the top, but i would wager it nets way better fuel economy in the real world. its a tossup.

Some of the Auto journalists I follow are reviewing it right now. Saw a few posts on Social media. Toyota says the Hybrid model will be the fastest RAV4 model. Imagine that.
https://www.motortrend.com/news/2019-toyota-rav4-6-things-know/
It does look more frumpy than the adventure trim which looks a lot better
And with true Torque vectoring AWD (On the Adventure trim) , no CVT, Better interior and a Hybrid option this should be a better Forester than the Forester.

yeah, the 2.5 would make for a GREAT Corolla GT-S

It’s about time Subaru bumped the power in the new Crosstrek.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 11:24 |

I know you joke but thats exactly what Toyota did with the adventure and I think its going to play to their advantage.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 11:26 |

I’m honestly excited for the hybrid, but the Adventure looks fun too.
The RAV4 is decently powerful for normal people and sadly I spend enough time in traffic that a hybrid system makes sense for me, plus the forthcoming Prius AWD is too small to lug around my three huge dogs (plus a small dog).

Not turrible. Maybe they will do a Pro model>?
![]() 11/15/2018 at 11:27 |

I don’t doubt it. I’m being somewhat facetious, but I’m actually looking forward to seeing these around.

I’m looking forward to seeing this up close and read some reviews on it, Toyota has really improved the past couple years and this would be a great car for my mom

Since I’m no longer a subaru fan boi, the RAV4, CRV, and Mazda CX5 are peaking my interest
. A 203 HP base engine certainly helps. It will also be (I’m assuming) very efficient.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 11:42 |

This is the engine that peaks at 40%+ thermal efficiency, I’d bet it will be great.

ugh those hexagon fenders “hey look we can be a Jeep too”
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:12 |

203 hp/184ft-lbs in a 3500+lb vehicle is fun?
Sounds utterly boring to me.

Makes me wonder what Subaru is going to do to compete. Their engines aren’t crazy efficient and they have sacrificed power to get to the MPG that they have. Their AWD system is good but with other manufacturers moving to tourqe vectoring rear ends I can’t see the Subaru system being that much better. They aren’t crazy funky or weird anymore and their reliability isn’t any better than Toyota (head gasket and oil starvation issues aside).
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:24 |

Sorry, not trying to hate, it’s just too heavy with too little torque. I will give it a plus for having a 6-speed auto instead of a CVT though, that should at least add some semblance of decency to it.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:28 |
|
I was SURE you had accidentally posted a photo of an updated Crosstrek. Since nobody’s calling you out on it, I’ve gotta just concede that all CUVs look alike.

8 speed
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:31 |

Huh, new for 2019. Might make it ok for a CUV.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:40 |

I think the fun factor will depend on the tranny. My Wrangler has a similar hp/weight ratio, but makes around 230 torquies. It has a 3.73 rear end and is fun if driven spiritedly as long as you don’t think about the 12mpg you’re probably getting.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:41 |

So this and the hybrid version are more powerful than the Lexus UX.
Toyota, you crazy.

Subaru is dead to me.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 12:56 |

That would be at the top of my budget. Considering my spouse will be driving the car I don’t think she would appreciate the POWER. I mean she short shifts the outback at 2500 rpm.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 13:05 |

A Rav4 Hybrid might be better in that case
![]() 11/15/2018 at 13:22 |

Subaru Reliability dropped off like a rock in the 0-20W oil era. I would be hard pressed to buy ANY subaru that wasn’t an EJ25
![]() 11/15/2018 at 13:27 |
|
I think the ratios will be geared towards economy...but...there will be 8 of them so lets hope they saved a few ones for fun.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 13:44 |
|
Probably the greatest advantage to Subaru keeping the EJ around for so long is that EVERYONE knows the common issues and can fix them aftermarket. To say nothing of the fact that they really haven’t come out with a motor that can beat its performance in the US is rediculous. I understand they are small and that they probably tied up a lot of the R&D budget with the Ascent and it’s engine but frankly the “new” Forester is half assed at best so hopefully the money they didn’t spend on that will go to the next WRX/STI.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 16:15 |

Reviews of the Accord and Camry with the same engines have shown that Honda’s 1.5T/ CVT and Toyota’s 2.5/8A are pretty evenly matched in efficiency and performance.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 16:22 |

it will be interesting indeed. I still maintain that the NA engine will do better in real world city, where the turbo might edge out the NA on the highway.

I'm really excited for this actually. If the hybrid gets 50mpg, that's a game changer.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 20:03 |

52. Something ( us mpg) is the number i heard but it comes with a lot of caveats. I would guess mid 30s City mid 40s highway.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 20:45 |
|
It may be the picture, the lighting, or the color, but I really like the look of that top image. The lines and shadows make it interesting to look at. Pretty much the opposite of everything else similar to it.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 22:35 |

before I read your line, I was expecting this to be the new forester.
Those specs are really impressive.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 22:51 |
|
Still for a vehicle that size, mid 40s is bananas. Only the Niro is similar but lacks any off road pretensions
![]() 11/16/2018 at 07:17 |
|
...wait, they moved from New MC to GA-K, yet the wheelbase is shorter than a Prius or a Corolla Wagon (which are on GA-C)?
Huh, guess they were mostly just after width. Although I hate the line about how they’re able to offer 19" wheels. This is supposed to be an off-road vehicle (I know, it’s not, but it’s supposed to be!), sidewall is your friend!
![]() 11/16/2018 at 07:24 |
|
Toyota’s hybrids don’t usually do much better on the highway than city - even some highly aerodynamic models (Prius comes to mind) are worse on highway, and the RAV4 doesn’t look particularly aerodynamic.
My extrapolations from the old Camry to the new Camry have the new RAV4 hybrid at the low 40s both city and highway in the EPA cycle.
52.something is likely an unadjusted number?
![]() 11/16/2018 at 07:27 |

To be fair, the NX is this thing’s equivalent, the UX is the equivalent of the C-HR (which is less powerful than either UX).
![]() 11/16/2018 at 09:02 |

I’m still waiting to hear the AWD mpgs on the Hybrib. I really really like the look of this care and the reliability of Toyota would definitely get me into it. Every hybrid/ev I’ve looked at has fallen extremely short of where I’d be willing to make the jump.

Looks more like the Forester if we are comparing to Subaru.

9k views. dayum. I was expecting this to get, like, 10
![]() 11/16/2018 at 10:58 |

Depends how it puts down the power, though, IMHO. I have a lot of fun with my E46 @184hp / 175ft-lb and a rear-biased awd. Granted, mine’s a manual. And you can turn off the nannies.

I feel it’ll have the same issue most new vehicles do: They lack low-end grunt and use extra trans gears to make up for it.
Given the 2018 Rav4's peak torque came in above 4000rpms, I would bet this new one’s torque will come in even higher, meaning it will need 8 speeds to feel quick.
![]() 11/16/2018 at 12:26 |
|
True; our Volvo has “enough” power but feels slow because a) high RPM peak power (I assume) and b) it
constantly
wants to shift up. If it were a manual, I’d be 1-2 gears down from where it is 99% of the time except over 60mph.
Basically any left turn across a wide road, the car is in 3rd by the time I complete the turn and want to accelerate in the traffic lane. But 3rd isn’t really good for accelerating from 15mph. So I have to guess how far down to press the pedal to get second but NOT FIRST because that’s way too much. I’m getting better at it, but it drives me nuts.
![]() 11/16/2018 at 12:37 |
|
And my little Acclaim feels great from any rpm in any gear and pulls like a freight train thanks to it’s huge torque band. It’s maybe got 160hp/190ft-lbs at the flywheel, but the torque band starts just above idle and pulls through 4k rpms.
Same goes for my van with 175hp/235ft-lbs (ish). Huge torque band keeps it happy regardless of gear.

Poor reliability, under powered in comparison to the competitors.

I wish they would give up the full time awd, so they aren’t hit with so much of a mpg penalty. I like the packaging of the Impreza, it has real roofracks and the AWD is nice. Also the safety si great. But yeah the number of people that have made complaints make me very weary.
![]() 11/16/2018 at 20:35 |

I get high 20’s in our 2013 outback. I think that is pretty good all things considered. The car got a new engine at 32k due to excessive oil consumption and it looks to be going down the same path again at 62k. That being said Subaru has been easy to deal with on these warranty claims, it’s just a pain in the ass.
